When Winning is About How You Play the Game

One of the most popular sayings adults tell children: “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game.” With so much at stake in the 52nd Super Bowl game, it’s little consolation that New England Patriots played a good game. (Congratulations to the winning team, Philadelphia Eagles!)

Pictured above: At the Super Bowl marathon in Huntington Beach, Federal Firefighter Cliff Walker, 51, hauled 60 to 70 pounds of full fire gear, including breathing apparatus, to raise money for Smiletrain. In his 11th marathon in full gear, he selected a charity that repairs cleft lips and palates for children in developing nations.

How Cliff Walker  plays the game…

  • Marathons are for the motivation, but primarily for raising money
  • Runs in gear to promote firefighter fitness, health, and wellness (cardiac arrest is the leading cause of line-of-duty deaths among firefighters)
  • Created California Fyrfit and California Warrior Fit, training firefighters and service members
  • Stages fitness competitions
  • Pushes boundaries with ultradistance racing and triathlons, with fire gear on!
  • Continues to set new challenges and goals — the more punishment the better
  • Believes the body can do incredible things — it’s the mind you’re battling
  • Fitness is important (especially for firefighters) — train to be uncomfortable so you’ll be comfortable when it matters most in critical situations
