Pick your superfood to celebrate this Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 at the Pistachio Festival in Newberry Springs or the Madera Pomegranate Festival. Both locally-grown foods are categorized as fruits and California happens to be the number 1 supplier of both, providing more than 98% of the nation’s crop according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

  • PISTACHIOS: A single ounce provides more fiber than one half-cup of broccoli; as much protein as an ounce of soybeans; and some heart-healthy fat (mostly mono- and polyunsaturated). Two ounces have more potassium than a large banana. And no cholesterol, of course.
  • POMEGRANATES: High in vitamin C and potassium, a great source of fiber, and low in calories, pomegranates are one of the healthiest foods you can eat! Pomegranate juice is high in three different types of polyphenols, a potent form of antioxidants. The three types – tannins, anthocyanins, and ellagic acid – are present in many fruits, but fresh pomegranate juice contains particularly high amounts of all three.
