California didn’t invent the taco but the state sure took off running with the concept, creating the world’s largest taco chain restaurant and celebrating this great hand food with three festivals in August!

  • Taco Bell, the 11th largest food chain in the world, is headquartered in Irvine, CA. More than 2 billion customers are served each year at 7,000 restaurants.
  • Taco Bell was founded March 21, 1962 in Downey, California.
  • Del Taco, the 88th largest food chain in world, has its corporate headquarters in Lake Forest, CA. It boasts 550 restaurants.
  • Del Taco was founded September 16, 1964 in Yermo, CA

Taco History

  • The taco most likely originated in Mexico, predating the arrival of the Spanish.
  • Fish tacos were the first and preferred style of tacos eaten by indigenous people in the Valley of Mexico lake region.
