Tarantula Festival Dispels Myths About Spider Giants

Published on: October 24, 2013

I hate spiders. I have been bitten by them  in hotels ranging from two star to four star “quality”. With my eagle eye I have seen spiders in carpets, on chairs, and in beds.  One Halloween I looked & felt like a monster because of a spider. I woke up several days before Halloween to find one eye was irritated and puffy. As time passed, the eye began to ooze and it was so swollen, I could hardly see beyond the monstrous eyelid. A doctor successfully diagnosed my spider bite, gave me antibiotics, and told me that I really should be sure to save the spider after it bit me next time so he could figure the course of treatment. When you are sleeping and get bit, there’s not much chance of collecting the creepy specimen, is there?

Note: This is not a picture of me, but shows pretty much how my eye looked after a spider bit it while I slept.

If you hate spiders, too, you may not be too thrilled about Coarsegold’s 16th Annual Tarantula Festival on October 26, 2013. But for those who can handle it, you’ll get to look at and touch those big hairy spiders who some believe can kill you. However, no fatalities have been attributed to tarantula bites and the arachnids are actually quite popular as exotic pets!  Tarantulas sizes range from as small as a fingernail to as large as a dinner plate–now that’s scary!

Coarsegold Tarantula Festival in the Village includes exhibits, games, Halloween activities and the exciting Live Tarantula Derby.
