Think California Tourist Season is Over? Au Contraire!

Summer is over, fall is on its way in just a few days, and kids are back on school. It seems like a good time to travel in California and get cheaper rooms at your favorite beach spots. But wait a minute! If you’re heading for the Central Coast–specifically the Monterey Bay cities of Monterey, Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach and Carmel, you may be in for a surprise. Corporate planners know the scene quite well, however, and they seek these coveted next 6 to 8 weeks to host their events in the region. The foggy coast traditionally experiences its finest, least foggiest weather this time of year when there’s more chance of sunshine and less chance of rain than any other time.

Just to test my theory from past years, I went online to see room rates at my favorite escape, Carmel Valley Ranch. Some weekends are sold out  and though there is availability, the rates are around $400-500/night. If you wait till November 4 (roughly), the same room drops down to $250. For those who can be flexible and plan their trips according to prices, lock in an affordable rate now for some October dates and hope for sunshine if you’re looking for that special resort escape. Otherwise, there are some great little hotels in Pacific Grove next to the public golf course and a few blocks from the beach. Prices can be had for around $100 and sometimes less if you shop around. Monterey Bay is one of my favorite places, and Carmel has many of my favorite things that you’ll enjoy, too.
