California Tiki” is meant to give you an idea of where the Tiki Culture came from and what it means. “It’s an escape from the increasing technological complexities of modern day living….The harder we work, the more we need to escape,” Adam Foshko wrote in his Tiki guide. He’s right! The key word is “escape.”

Disneyland has known for a very long time that TIKI is a hit! The Enchanted Tiki Room with tropical birds, tiki gods and colorful flowers that come to life in a swinging South Seas musical celebration has been a theme park staple since 1963 (more than 50 years!) You can soak up this mythical tiki paradise any day of the year at The Happiest Place on Earth.

One of the best escapes in all of California this August is San Diego’s Tiki Oasis. The family-fun (mixed with some adults-only burlesque shows after dark,) is a five-day festival featuring tiki crafts, clothes, music, cocktails, cars, poetry, pin-ups, food and poolside  ambiance that epitomizes the San Diego lifestyle. The popular opener to this festival is the Tiki Oasis Meet and Mingle at the Historic Bali Hai on Shelter Island.

Highlights to this year’s summer fest:

  • Walt Disney Discovers Tiki, with David Dr. Skipper Marley
  • Create A World Of Tiki In Your Home Bar
  • How To Bump & Grind, with Kitten Deville
  • King Kukulele Kids Tiki Tour

Throughout California this August you’ll find splashes of TIKI at Polynesian Festivals and Events

  • SAN MATEO: San Francisco Bay Area Aloha Festival
  • SANTA CRUZ Aloha Races and Polynesian Festival at Santa Cruz Wharf
  • ELK GROVE: Heiva Ma’ohi O’ Patitifa
  • ORANGE: Polynesian Street at Orange International Street Fair
