TOTEM traces the fascinating  journey of the human species from its original amphibian state to its ultimate desire to fly. The characters are inspired by many founding myths, and they evolve on stage with literally thousands of turns and twists in acrobatic feats that mesmerize.

One of the most sizzling shows for its lighting, stage sets, costumes, choreography and stunts, if you’ve never seen Cirque du Soleil productions, TOTEM holds significance for Californians. The Native American music, drumming and hoop dancers in two parts include spectacular roller skaters dressed in white, evoking images of a wedding dance. Costume designer Kym Barrett was inspired by ceremonial clothing of a number of North American Indian tribes and didn’t seek to portray any one culture when using a Hopi cross and a headdress and extensive soft leather in costumes.

The show unfolds with a young Amerindian dancer taking us into a magical world, tracing the history of the evolution of species with his rings. A Crystal Man comes from space to spark life on Earth. The riveting,  fast-paced journey is possibly the production company’s most commanding and finest show ever. Definitely go see it!

Locations: Los Angeles (San Pedro) through Nov. 10, 2013;  Irvine Nov. 21- Dec. 29, 2013; Santa Monica Jan. 17- Feb. 9, 2014. See: cirquedusoleil.com
