Trick or Treat Food Dilemma

There’s a dilemma when trying to avoid giving sugar to trick or treaters

  • 5,000 calories in the average trick or treat goody bag
  • 4 cups of sugar in a single kid’s Halloween candy — that’s a 2-pound bag of granulated sugar
  • One-third of children in California are obese
  • Non-GMO cane sugar treats may be better (in that Dow Roundup chemicals are avoided) but there’s still the problem of sugar content
  • The majority of sugar-free candies and gums contain saccharin or Aspartame, which can be more harmful than sugar

Other options

  • Pre-packaged nuts or trail mix
  • Trinkets and toys
  • Coins
  • Gift certificates for food such as McDonald’s Halloween Treat Pack good for apple slices, juice or milk and hamburger or Go Gurt

Halloween trick or treats

  • Age 60+ most likely to hand out candy (84%)
  • Midwest hands out most candy (79% answer door)
  • California low in candy-giving this year due to Halloween falling on Friday (estimated 70% or less will answer door)
  • Trending — parents seek malls, downtown districts, parks & recreation events and trunk or treat events
  • M&Ms and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are most popular candies in America
