Veterinarian Author Loves His Cats More than His Dogs, Sort Of

Published on: April 20, 2012

Dr. Marty Becker, “America’s Veterinarian” and author of 20 books about pets, didn’t actually say he loves his cats more, but he did say that he finds them much more interesting. The dog is like child waiting for you, needing your love and hanging on your every move. But cats are completely unpredictable. They can be lovable one moment, then totally snub you the next.

The veterinarian (drmartybecker.com)  recently wrote a book, “Your Cat, the Owners Manual,” which provides insider tips from one of the nation’s best known vets. Here’s some sage advice for cat owners:

  • Never feed a cat dog food. The cat will go blind if you do so. There’s a scientific explanation involving cats being meat eaters, while dogs can digest plants and vegetables.
  • If you own a cat, buy a water fountain. One of the cat’s biggest problems is not getting enough water to drink. You can avoid many vet bills by investing in this handy water source for cats.
  • Buy a cat when your kids are young. They will have fewer allergies when they grow up, but by the age of 10 it doesn’t work.
  • The most allergies come from cats that are: black, male, not neutered.
  • The least allergies come from cats that are: white, female, spayed.
  • Use baby wipes once a day on your cat’s fur to help reduce dander which causes allergies.
  • When one of several pets dies, take the other pets to the vet to let them see it and say goodbye. Some pets can quit eating and have other illnesses, not understanding or knowing what happened to their companion pet.
  • Cats offer so much relief from stress for pet owners, that humans are shown to have less heart attacks and other significant health problems, especially in later years of ownership.
