Chicagoans may bristle at the San Franciscan’s definition of cold, but along with the festive or ugly emergency holiday sweater, every San Franciscan carries a mental list of places to seek refuge in case the marine layer dampens a lovely afternoon. Whether you’re looking to recharge with a tasty treat or need a spot to warm your bones, here are some great drinks for chilly days:

  • Gourmet Walks Holiday Lights and Chocolate Tours let you sip hot chocolate and sample peppermint truffles.
  • Boulette’s Larder serves European hot chocolate reminiscent of Old World charm.
  • La Oaxaqueña taquería whips up a delicious Mexican hot chocolate.
  • Teddy Bear Tea at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel on Nob Hill is a holiday delight.
  • The Fairmont’s annual Gingerbread Holiday Tea continues through Dec. 31.
  • Laze around the waterfront Slanted Door for afternoon tea.
  • Loose leaf tea lovers flock to Samovar’s four tea houses in the Castro, Yerba Buena, Valencia Street and Hayes Valley.
  • Irish Coffee at Buena Vista Cafe is a must–it was the first place to serve this drink in America!
  • Smuggler’s Cove is devoted entirely to rum with 400 in stock. Try the Hot-Buttered Rum drink on a cold day.
  • Head to Elixir in the Mission district for a Hot Toddy. 330 different whiskeys are available!
