In what sounds like rooting for your favorite ball team, people rally around the Monarch butterfly when the anticipated migrations return to California. Many years ago their annual return was taken for granted till people started noticing population decline. It created cause for concern, and now a complex network of volunteer citizens actually count and record the Monarch butterfly population in their assigned areas.

You can see groves of Monarchs first-hand!

  • Pacific Grove’s Monarch Grove Sanctuary is most active now through Spring. Butterfly Town, U.S.A. Monarch Parade took place October 1, 2016.
  • Santa Cruz Natural Bridges State Park Welcome Back Monarchs Day takes place Oct. 9.
  • Pismo Beach Monarch Grove Grand Opening Celebration on Oct. 22 welcomes back Monarchs for another season.
  • Goleta Butterfly Grove sees the major influx of Monarchs from mid-November through mid-February. Docents are available on weekends from 11am-2pm during these months.
