On the 4th of July Californians have dogs on the mind–2 kinds–the type we call pets, and the food consumed with relish, mustard and all the fixins’. National Hot Dog Day takes place in July and we’re rooting for Joey Chestnut to bring home the “gold” from Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, just like he has for the past several 4th of July’s. He’s the Top Dog, the World Champ of hot dogs. Several cities in California are having hot dog eating contests on the 4th of July and the City of Tehachapi hosts its annual Hot Dog Festival on the 4th of July.
Then there’s the wiener dog and assorted canine pets, not to be ignored on the 4th. For many dogs the 4th of July is a day of distress, howling, barking and wishing the fireworks would just shut up. There are some special events to appease pets and keep them occupied.
