The weather could not have been nicer for Mardi Gras 2017, celebrated in San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter and Hillcrest neighborhoods, San Francisco’s Fillmore, in Paradise, Truckee and other cities throughout the state on Feb. 28! Even though we like to party, there’s a lot more Wild West than Big Easy in California…

  • A new exhibition at Angels Camp Museum (angelscamp.gov/museum) looks at Medicine in the Gold Rush. While it examines how doctors and drugstores had a social role that continues to influence life in local communities today, author Craig MacDonald has also discovered Gold Rush Quacks. Outraged victims of medical imposters complained that “MD” stood for “Money Down.”
History is rich with tales of good people and unscrupulous scoundrels!
  • Amidst great white shark sightings along the Wild West Coast this week in Huntington Beach, you may also spot Chuck Linnen, who fascinates with tales about the sharks, 20-foot waves and the thrill of being a Lifeguard in Huntington and Long Beach. The Surfing Walk and Surfing Hall of Fame recipient is often seen walking the HB Pier.
