For those ultra-concerned about their health, the damage has already been done. It rained less than 72 hours before New Year’s Day Polar Plunges take place on the California coast. What does that mean in terms of safety? According to government and non-profit agencies focused on ocean water quality, they recommend you not go in the water on New Year’s Day unless it hasn’t rained for 72 hours. In real world terms, however, most will disregard such warnings and will GO FOR IT! 9 times out of 10, everything will turn out great. But for those who are prone to catching things, here’s what you can do to minimize the effects of and exposure to possible pollution:

1. Just get your feet wet…not your entire body.
2. Don’t stick your head underwater.
3. Wash off right after you come out of the ocean.
4. Or, don’t go in the water, just to be safe.
