World Marriage Day Celebrated in February

World Marriage Day began in Baton Rouge, La., in 1981. The event was so successful, by 1982, 43 Governors officially proclaimed the day and celebrations spread to U.S. military bases in several foreign countries. In 1983 it was designated to be celebrated each year on the second Sunday in February. In 1993 Pope John Paul II imparted his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day. Here are some marriage statistics.

  • LOS ANGELES: One of California’s largest celebrations takes place in Los Angeles at Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. It is so well attended that they have narrowed the event down to those who have been married 25 years or more. Two services are held, one in English and one in Spanish. You must fill out the online application (olacathedral.org) to participate and get your special keepsake photo. In 2014 the event is held on Feb. 9, 10 a.m.
  • SACRAMENTO: In Sacramento at Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament it is held on Saturday, February 15, 2014, call to pre-register: (916) 733-0123.
  • OXNARD: Anniversary Mass World Marriage Day  Sunday, February 9, 2014 at 2:30 p.m. Santa Clara Church, Oxnard 323 South E Street, Oxnard, CA 93030, To sign up, call Sofie at the Regional Office at (805) 682-0442. Registration ends February 3, 2014!
