As thoughts turn to California’s endless summers with the cool Hawaiian breezes blowing our direction, every publication wants to get in on the action of picking the World’s Best Beaches. California beaches are generally overlooked with a few exceptions such as Venice Beach (in photos.)  Why is Venice Beach one of the best in the world, according to CNN, Travel Channel and Travel + Leisure?  Just take a look!

When travel and news sources publish “best beaches lists” the choices often come down to a writer’s favorites. With little or no scientific rigor applied to the selection process, posted comments offer another perspective:
“Venice Beach, California…are you kidding me?! That beach sucks. If you’re not stepping on a hypodermic needle you’re stepping in dog poop. So many better beaches in California…and all the good one’s are outside of LA County.” – JT

  • World’s Best Beaches:  Venice Beach (CNN, Travel Channel, Travel + Leisure);  San Diego’s La Jolla (FODOR); Big Sur’s Pfeiffer Beach (Travel + Leisure)
  • No California Beaches in World’s Best: Conde Nast Traveler, Lonely Planet, National Geographic, TripAdvisor, US News & World Report
