From the mountains to the sea–California beaches are famous for their winter views of snow-capped mountains. Pictured is Huntington Beach’s Shorebreak Hotel at Huntington City Beach with the San Bernardino (Big Bear) mountains and ski resorts towering in the distance.  There are few places in the world where visitors can access to sandy, warm beaches and ski resorts within a two hour drive.

Scoring some of the highest ratings since agencies began monitoring water quality, California beaches generally provided safe swimming experiences this past year. Most beaches earned excellent water quality grades with 96% (430 of 450.) Overall water quality at beaches throughout Ventura County remains among the best in the state.

Problem areas such as portions of Malibu, Long Beach, San Clemente’s Poche Beach and Border Field State Park (San Diego,) and Avalon (Catalina Island,) have been working to fix the problems with some positive results. Avalon Beach has shown improvement for the first time in nine years. In a year filled with curiosities such as the mysterious melting of sea stars and predictions for Fukushima debris would arrive on California’s shores, the water quality reports were great news for residents and tourists wanting to experience California’s famous beaches.
