Hollywood Park Race Track closed permanently four days ago while season opener at Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, Calif. began on Dec. 26, 2013 with a free calendar give-away. The race is on! Meanwhile, on the road the CHP has beefed up its holiday enforcement on California’s Highways.

New driving laws in 2014:

1. Drivers under age 18 can’t use cell phones while driving–hands-free devices are prohibited, too.
2. Starting in September drivers must allow 3 feet when passing a cyclist–it’s the law.
3.  Child abduction by a parent with custody becomes part of the Amber Alert system.

California Drunk Driving Statistics:

  • 18-year-olds are at highest risk for fatal crash involvements, and teenaged drivers are the largest age category.
  • Alcohol and drugs are the top cause of fatal accidents, with unsafe speed the #1 factor .
  • Teenagers have highest arrests for hit & run.
  • Hit and run declines steeply with age. At age 60, as with DUI, hit & run arrest of drivers age 60 or more is close to zero.
  • The highest “had been drinking” fatal crashes are in ages 20-24; the lowest are in age 85 and older.
  • Age 16-19 men “had been drinking” fatal crashes are five times higher than girls/women the same age.
  • 73.1% DUI arrest resulted in convictions that remain on record for 10 years.
  • Approx. 5% of all California drivers have a DUI conviction on their record.
  • It usually take 87 days from arrest to conviction and 8 day from conviction to update in DMV database.
  • The main Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) of those convicted is .16, twice the legal limit.
