The river, the bay and lake are great spots to be to watch fireworks on the 4th of July — but they also offer daytime entertainment when Californians show their pride (and creativity) at annual 4th of July Boat Parades. We’ve found about a dozen of these events, so there are likely triple that amount of boat parades celebrating the nation’s independence. Pictured clockwise from bottom left: Long Beach 4th of July Dingy Parade; Westlake Village 4th of July Boat Parade; Oceanside Yankee Doodle Dinghy Parade; and Newport Beach Old Glory Boat Parade.

  • WACKIEST: Lakeport Cardboard Duct Tape Race
  • OLDEST: Newport Beach Old Glory Boat Parade, began in 1950s
  • MOST UNIQUE: Russian River Water Boat Parade followed by the Water Curtain
  • MOST REMOTE: Bucks Lake 4th of July Boat Parade; Wildwood Lake 4th of July Boat Parade
  • MOST HOSPITABLE: Avila Beach 4th of July Boat Parade — anything or anybody that floats and waves a flag is welcome
