When C. MacDonald attended the opening day of the annual fair in Costa Mesa, Calif. on Friday, July 11, 2014 he saw his favorite attractions and snapped some photos during his brief, eventful 60 minute visit. Here’s a list of fairs throughout the state.

Things to do in 60 minutes at the fair:

  • Eat. Try frog legs, fried Oreos, fried Whiskey, and the tasty Texas Tater Dogs. One merchant offers guests the option of ordering and consuming a huge Texas-size funnel cake which is free if you can it the whole thing!
  • Hop on a ride. Zipper, OMG and Alien Abduction are several great choices that will hurl you into space. Just don’t eat the monster funnel cake before you take a thrill ride.
  • See the flower displays, butterflies, plants, fruits and vegetables that are exceptional.
  • Drink in the beer gardens.
  • Listen to a band perform.
  • See the latest kitchen and household gadgets. From non-stick pans to easy-squeeze mops, these modern wonders never cease to amaze and entertain.
  • Get a foot massage and back massage.
  • Be entertained — Watch ladies dance the hula on the festival stage.
  • Watch the 4H students groom their livestock in hopes of winning a prize.
