It can be hard to accept life’s punches thrown our way. But lemons (and lemon punch) offer the perfect lesson in the necessity of things that may not be wanted or pleasant. You’ve heard the saying, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!” As Californians cook with extreme heat a cold glass of lemonade is a real thirst-quencher. Without the HEAT you wouldn’t appreciate the COLD drink quite so much. And lemonade, itself, is the transformation of something unbearably SOUR into a SWEET beverage. This weekend thousands of gallons of lemonade will be served at the Goleta Lemon Festival, which celebrates the bright yellow fruit seen in orchards along Highway 101 on the Central Coast. The free event with free parking features lemon pie eating contest, lemon cotton candy, lemon flavored beverages and foods, a car show, and plenty of shady spots in Girsh Park to stay cool.
CALIFORNIA LEMON CROP 2013 – 2014 forecast is 40.0 million cartons (800,000 tons), down 5% from last season.
