May Sporting Events: California AMGEN Bike and Spartan Endurance Races

The World’s best cyclists come together May 13-19, 2018 for the only Worldtour Race in the United States, Amgen Tour of California. First launched in 2006, about a half dozen California host cities get the opportunity to cough up sponsorship dollars, hotel rooms and other perks, and bring media attention, tourism and fame to their destinations. Always a standard is Sacramento where the race begins or ends. It is also the home of Visit California, the state’s official tourism organization that has promoted this event from the beginning.

  • Men’s race includes 645 miles of roadways, highways and coastlines
  • Seven stages
  • Long Beach to Sacramento
  • Women’s race includes 3 stages spanning 187 miles

  • Stage 1 Long Beach
  • Stage 2 Ventura to Santa Barbara County (Gibraltar Road)
  • Stage 3 King City to Monterey County (Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca)
  • Stage 4 San Jose (Time Trial)
  • Stage 5 Stockton to Elk Grove
  • Stage 6 Folsom to South Lake Tahoe
  • Stage 7 Sacramento

Spartan Race

For those who prefer participating in sports instead of watching them, Spartan Race is coming to Southern California May 18-20, 2018 (sign up at spartan.com). Held at Snow Summit Ski Resort and presented by Big Bear Lake, the event features the nation’s most competitive athletes as well as weekend warriors and new racers competing for $100,000 in series cash prizes and points toward competing in the 2018 World Championship in North Lake Tahoe September 29.
