While the fun side of snow is apparent in mountain resorts such as Tahoe Donner Downhill Ski Resort, there’s a “bigger picture” issue that makes Californians cheer for the white stuff.

Thanks to recent winter storms, the state’s snowpack is expected to be at or above historical averages for this time of year, and will be confirmed when California Department of Water Resources conducts the season’s second snow survey at Phillips Station on January 31st. On average, the snowpack supplies about 30% of California’s water needs, melting in the spring and early summer to meet the state’s water demand in the summer and fall.

The state’s major reservoirs are showing promise in 2019:

  • San Luis Reservoir, the largest off-stream reservoir in the United States where water is stored for the State Water Project and Central Valley Project (CVP,) is at 83% of capacity and 109% of average.
  • Several CVP reservoirs serving the San Joaquin Valley are near or above 100% of their averages for this time of year.
  • Castaic Lake is 94% of average.
  • Shasta Lake, the CVP’s largest reservoir, is at 62% of capacity and 94% of average.
