During California’s Gold Rush two brothers labored feverishly in a stream –week after week– with little luck. Frustrated and nearly broke, they decided to gamble on a new career. Using cut tree stumps as card tables, they borrowed a tent and set up a crude gambling parlor by the riverbank.
With growing prosperity, the loyal sons wrote their parents about their incredible success–well, sort of. They hedged a tad, not mentioning their gambling enterprise. Instead, they reported a thriving banking business.
