Baseball Winter Meetings in San Diego After 30 Year Hiatus

SAN DIEGO, CALIF. –Major League Baseball Teams from throughout the country are “wheeling and dealing,” signing Free Agents, trading ballplayers and driving up the value of athletes as they try to improve their franchises at these exciting Winter Meetings, where owners, executives, general managers, managers, agents, players and fans congregate. “It’s like seeing the entire industry in one place,” said one executive. Steve Leavitt, a former scout with the San Diego Padres, New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, looked forward to meeting his new boss with the Washington Nationals at the event, which is being held in San Diego for the first time in 30 years. Activities are going on all over town, especially at the Bayfront Hilton and Manchester Hyatt. “I’m excited. It’s such a great place to meet new and old friends,” the former catcher said. “Everyone loves coming here. It couldn’t be a better location. For many, it’s their first visit to Petco Park, which sits next to San Diego Convention Center.” Many of the deals are consummated behind closed doors as teams often compete for the same top ballplayers, driving certain salaries up and up.  Read more…>
