You know you’re at UC Santa Cruz when… your college radio station is a cabin in the redwoods.

How many times can one listen to Fleetwood Mac’s Rhiannon? Is 20 times per day enough? Living in Los Angeles (once considered the music capital,)  offers no assurance that what’s commercially available is fresh, innovative or different.   Having surveyed music stations throughout the nation, three of the best come from California universities. These non-commercial stations offer opportunities to hear something new nearly all the time. Here are three of our favorites:

  • KZSC – UC Santa Cruz – kzsc.org
Anything goes from Rock to Jazz, Blues, Rap, etc. DJs are students in training who rotate out
Favorite current host: Kill Fugly Radio with Bobo
  • KJAZZ – Cal State Long Beach – jazzandblues.org
DJs are seasoned pros of the jazz genre
Favorite hosts: Helen Borgers, Bubba Jackson and Gary Wagner
  • KUSC – USC – kusc.org  – Classical
DJs offer narration about composers & works
    Favorite host: Jim Svejda
