Are you stubborn as a mule? If so, there’s a Memorial Weekend festival to fit you.  Bishop Mule Days pays homage to the animal that’s not a horse and not a donkey–that it’s mommy and daddy. A mule is the offspring of a male donkey and a female horse, possessing some of the most desirable characteristics of both– endurance and sure-footedness of the donkey, and the vigor, strength and courage of the horse. Intelligent and determined, mules have a reputation for being stubborn though testing has found that label isn’t necessarily true. Mules usually surpass horses, donkeys and even dogs in problem solving.

In California mules are used to transport cargo in wilderness areas of the Sierra Nevada mountains, where shoulder to shoulder — miner and mule used to breathe the same dust 10 hours a day during the Gold Rush. Today you can watch mules compete in exciting events at the annual Western-themed Mule Days Celebration featuring headliner acts Dave Stamey and Baxter Black. See the full schedule at muledays.org
