After a week of heat topping out at 104 degrees, visitors are back to sweater weather and the gritty, sand breeze at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area in Oceano, Calif. It is unique among California Beaches. There’s no other place we know of where you can ride horses, drive cars, ride all terrain vehicles, light bonfires, camp and kitesurf all at one beach! Advice to women (and men) with coiffed hair: it won’t last there.  Nice shoes? Leave them at home.

We spoke with people packing up and leaving after their weekend adventures in the sand. A girl from Hollister said her caravan of friends and family with half a dozen trucks were heading back home. “The weather was actually COLD on the beach–such a drastic change from last week,” said Christi S. She loved it and plans to return “sooner rather than later.” She said her group gathers annually for a weekend ATV ride-a-thon before Memorial Weekend when the crowds come.
