While some boating contests and events champion the cause of making boats that float (such as the Three Rivers Bathtub Race and municipal pool contests where kids make boats from cardboard and duct tape, pumpkins, and other such materials,) California’s certainly one of the top markets in the U.S. for serious boating.
Although Florida has traditionally ranked #1 for boating industry sales and services, the Golden State remains a major contender. In additional to military vessels and their ports, ship museums such as the Queen Mary, and the nation’s largest combined shipping ports — Port of Los Angeles and Port of Long Beach — recreational boating and fishing spans the entire state from the northern redwood coast to San Diego county.
