Newport to Ensenda is a 125.5 mile sailboat yacht race sponsored by Newport Ocean Sailing Association (NOSA) that sailors consider a whole lot of fun. "Send-Off" Fiesta at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club the night before the race, a long-standing tradition, sets the tone for the days to come when sailor - teams leave Newport Harbor and head south of the U.S. border to Mexico.Post-race parties take place on Saturday and Sunday at Bahia Hotel in Ensenada.

With over 50 trophy categories, the race provides many opportunities to win and keep the tradtion of over 60 years going strong. Founded in 1948 after WWII by a young sailing club,  Newport Ocean Sailing Association, over 100 boats participated and through its many years of sailing races, celebrity participants have included Humphrey Bogart, Buddy Ebsen (Beverly Hillbillies,) comedienne Vicki Lawrence and Walter Cronkite.

Classes for monohulls, multihulls, and cruisers in more than 20 classes -- maxi-yachts, top ultra-light, and non-spinnaker-- assure the widest participation possible in a single race. Nearly 700 entries set the record one year.

Locals, sailing fans & families come out to watch the launch of the race best seen from vantage points such as Inspiration Point in Corona del Mar. Bring a pair of binoculars, a lawn chair, beach chair or blanket to see it even better. Some even bring picnic baskets or take-out lunch sandwiches.

While the launch provides about an hour of entertainment, the race takes approx. 1 day to complete as it runs parallel to the coast heading south past Tijuana to Ensenada.

A Newport Beach sailor who enjoyed racing in the event many years now sits on the hill at Inspiration Point with his wife enjoying sunshine and blue skies as the race begins. "We come out to watch every year," he said.

It is no surprise that there is so much passion and camaraderie for sailing in Newport Beach. The city road signs include sailboat logos, and one portion of Pacific Coast Highway includes a city sign, " Mariner's Mile". The sailing clubs abound--Newport Beach Yacht Club, Lido Isle Yacht Club, Balboa Yacht Club, Newport Harbor Yacht Club, Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club, Winward Sailing Club, South Shore Yacht Club, and Balboa Basin Yacht Club.
