Cartoon character Yogi Bear, a Hanna-Barbera creation, made his debut in 1958 in the the Huckleberry Hound Show. Said to be inspired by another fictitious character, Ed Norton on The Honeymooners, Yogi became more popular than Huckleberry Hound and in 1961 was given his own show.
“I’m smarter than the av-er-age bear!” said Yogi, who was often seen with his little side-kick, Boo Boo.
Why mention Yogi Bear and Boo Boo? Californians have gone cuckoo for Halloween Boo at the Zoo events, not designed to scare the living daylights out of humans, but to entertain for the benefit of zoo causes — namely feeding and caring for animals. Some zoos such as Big Bear Alpine Zoo actually rescue bears who’ve been caught (like Yogi) raiding too many “pic-a-nic baskets.”
The annual productions around Halloween often include special animal interactions and feedings, or kids’ trick or treating.
