Californians can get their pirate fantasy thrills any day of the year at the Disneyland theme park ride, Pirates of the Caribbean, or by watching the Pirate Dinner Theater show in Buena Park. It’s all just fun and games, but sometimes the pirate threat is real. California’s cruise ships to Baja have faced such threats and as a result began employing different measures to keep their seafaring guests safe. The history of pirate acts in California and the West Coast have not been as abundant as the southeast U.S. in Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi. Well known pirate, Frenchman Hippolyte de Bouchard, raided the Presidio of Monterey in 1818 and has been called California’s only pirate. On land the pirate festivals are as popular as ever!
