New Year’s Bell Ringings

In San Juan Capistrano at the Mission the historic bells ring daily at 9 a.m. (left). In San Francisco at the Asian Art Museum the bell is rung each New Year’s Eve with the public getting a chance to ring it (top). In San Pedro the Korean Friendship Bell is rung on New Year’s Eve (bottom).

What does 2018 (Chinese Year of the Dog) bring for California?

New laws

  • Gas tax went up 12 cents per gallon on Nov. 1, 2017.
  • SB179 allows Californians to choose their sexual identity  as either female, male or nonbinary on Drivers License.
  • You no longer face losing your Drivers Licenses because of unpaid traffic fines.
  • AB1303 – Window Tinting is allowed with dermatologist certification for medical conditions such as Lupus.
  • Recreational marijuana use is legal. You can grow 6 plants in your yard, buy pot and smoke it if you an adult.
  • Marijuana Use in Cars is illegal.
  • High School Exit Exam for graduating has been permanently scrapped.
  • Community college fees waived for one academic year to first-time students who are enrolled in 12 or more semester units and qualify for aid under a FAFSA or California Dream Act application.
  • Student Immigration Status prohibits public schools, including community colleges, California State University and University of California campuses from collecting information about student citizenship or immigration status and that of their families.
  • Sanctuary State restricts local law enforcement agencies from communicating with federal immigration authorities about people in custody, except those previously convicted of felonies in the past 15 years.
  • Ban the Box Law prohibits businesses with as few as five employees from asking about a job applicant’s criminal history.
