Master baker, Paul Gauweiler, of Huntington Beach, Calif. has brought happiness to countless families and individuals, including soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan who have enjoyed his specially made cakes shipped from California. At Halloween he bakes cookies shaped like pumpkins and at Christmas there are delicious gingerbread pastries and his famous Baumkuchen (tree cake).  He wears a smile and yet, deep inside this amazing chef lies a hurt that’s been with him all his life.

“I wish I could have grown up with a father,” he said. His dad, Robert Gauweiler (left photo), was assassinated by a Nazi firing squad in 1944 because of his beliefs. But before he was murdered, they let him write a letter to his wife and family. Paul Gaulweiler still has a hard time reading it, but he never forgets. Here’s the story.

You can also watch the  youtube video in which he reads and translates the German note from “papa”. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5uHJLXaB2w
