HOLTVILLE, CALIF. — Why carrots? It may seem unusual to build a festival around the carrot but in Holtville they have no problem at all cooking and sampling carrot cake, desserts, breads and appetizers at City Hall this week. The orange-colored root vegetable is the center of attention at the Carrot Cookery Contest series with categories for Little Chefs and Junior Chefs, as well as adults. The “Carrot Capital of the Nation” is hosting Holtville Carrot Festival featuring Carrot Festival Parade, carnival, a race, art & crafts, antique tractor show and entertainment. On Super Bowl Sunday there’s even a Family Tailgate Cooking Contest.
