From tires to a baby stroller with a demon doll’s head attached, the items you find at a clean up can be fascinating or really gross you out! On a beach cleanup I volunteered for at Dockweiler Beach in Los Angeles, I found drugs in a see-through vial (not sure what they were but looked illegal) and several of us found large quantities of discarded hypodermic needles and medical waste washed up from the sea and strewn all over the shoreline.  Talk about polluting our oceans and the foods (fish) we eat!  Coastal Cleanup Weeks take place Sept. 20-Oct. 12, 2014.

California Coastal Cleanup Day this Saturday, September 20, 2014, celebrates three decades.

  • 58,000 volunteers pitched in in 2013 for Coastal Cleanup
  • Guinness World Records calls it the Largest Garbage Collection
  • Since the program started in 1965 more than one million Californians have volunteered
  • More than 15 million pounds of debris has been collected
