This weekend two California regions celebrate gold discoveries — in Marshall State Historic Park (right photo) they celebrate Gold Discovery Day on Oct.9-11, 2015 with reenactments of an 1850’s gold mining encampment, a vibrant and bustling tent town. Meet miners, gamblers and hard-working pioneers who sought a better life and opportunities in the West.

In Taft (left image) Oildorado festival every five years celebrates a late 19th century oil discovery and the city’s location between major oil and natural gas fields. In addition to the Maids of Petroleum and Whiskerino contests this weekend, Oildorado also  includes oilfield skills contests such as well pulling, backhoe and welding, pipefitting and crane operation. On Oct. 16-18 there’s an Oilstock Music Festival. See taftoildoradodays.com
