As several September pow wows recently celebrated Ohlone and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nations in California, many have come to learn more about native cultures through a favorite pasttime–gaming at casinos where you may actually encounter a pow wow on your visit. Here are a few pow wows on the horizon, including some that celebrate Native American Day on Sept. 23, 2016 (always the 4th Friday in September in California by AB 1953, signed by Governor Ronald Reagan in 1968.)

  • PORTERVILLE: Tule River Powwow September 16-18, 2016, an inter-tribal pow wow at McCarthy Ranch
  • LONG BEACH: Moompetam Native American Festival, Sept.17-18, celebrates indigenous maritime cultures at Aquarium of the Pacific
  • BISHOP: Paiute Pabanamanina Gathering, Parade and Pow Wow Sept.23-25 at Paiute Palace Casino
  • CABAZON: Morongo Thunder & Lightning Pow Wow Sept.23-25 at Morongo Casino Resort
  • ANDERSON: Stillwater Pow Wow Redding Rancheria Sept.30-Oct.3 at Shasta District Fair Grounds
  • SANTA YNEZ: Inter-Tribal Pow Wow Oct.1-2 at Live Oak Campground
