Although National Kite Month doesn’t begin till late March, California kite festivals in Redondo Beach and Huntington Beach are held early in the month. Winter and Spring are ideal times to fly kites when there are less crowds, especially at beaches and parks.  You can almost time the wind’s arrival at California beaches — kite-flying winds blow in after lunch (usually anywhere from 1 to 2:30 p.m.) and last for one to two hours. If you want to fly a kite it’s important to pay attention to the wind where you live or are visiting. Deltas, Diamonds and Dragon kites fly well in light to medium winds (approximately 6-15 mph) while Box Kites and stickless Parafoil kites fly better when the winds get a little stronger (approximately 8-25 mph). When leaves and bushes start to move, but before it really starts to blow is the ideal time to fly a kite. Here are some kite flying tips!
