This week parents are looking for safe places to take their little trick or treaters. California Main Street Alliance members hosting Halloween trick or treating on Oct. 31 most often tout their events as “safe”. A lot goes into growing California’s Main Streets into safe, welcoming places. Often built before the advent of cars, as cities grow and customers want outdoor dining, bicycle parking, and pedestrian crossings, physical constraints can add extra challenges. The State of California produced an interesting and useful report called “Main Street, California – A Guide for Improving Community and Transportation Vitality” (dot.ca.gov). In the 92 page report which examines roads and highways throughout California’s centers of commerce, research has shown that investments in transportation projects can profoundly can shape communities beyond the intended benefits of the transportation system:
