Question: Where’s the best place in the nation to see free opera?
Answer: California, of course! Believed to date back to the 16th century, opera initially was meant for audiences of aristocrats and wealthy families. But in California we’re all about “FREE” and fortunate for us, there are many passionate people/benefactors bringing it to the masses.
FREE OPERA! When thousands of people packed into San Francisco’s Opera in the Ballpark; San Diego Civic Concourse to see San Diego Opera, San Jose’s Opera in Bramhall Park; San Ramon’s Opera in Central Park; Walnut Creek or Palm Springs Opera in the Park, the crowds were a testimony to California’s interest in opera. Though not typically thought of as the epicenter of opera, California has dozens of opera companies, productions and some of the nation’s best known schools such as USC Thornton School of Music.
