San Francisco, which boasts the largest oyster festival on the coast, put its celebration to bed in May. But there are others on the way — California actually has a handful of oyster festivals to enjoy.

  • Next weekend the 26th annual Arcata Bay Oyster Festival includes the quirky and fun Oyster Calling Contest, followed by the The Point’s Shuck-and-Swallow Contest.
  • On the very same weekend and opposite end of the state, San Diego’s 7th annual Oyster & Music Festival is filled with two glorious days of music and food at Marina Embarcadero.
  • Then in July the 5th annual Oyster Festival in Avila Beach includes music and a shucking contest. While admission is $22, the 55+ crowd gets in free.
  • Finally, Bodega Seafood Festival in August, which is heavy on oysters, helps visitors discover that there are some fantastic oyster bars and restaurants in the surrounding area.
