Snowmobiling in California’s mountain resorts is usually considered a winter recreational activity. You’ll find snowmobile rentals in Mammoth Lakes (shown in photo,) Mount Shasta, Lake Tahoe, Foresthill, Portola, Lassen, and most places where there’s snow. But Bear Valley is unique–it’s a snowmobile ONLY winter ski destination closed to drive-through traffic after the first big snowfall. Each year State Route 4 (approx. half a mile east of SR 207 / Mt. Reba Turnoff) to Junction SR 89 / Ebbetts Pass shuts down, and for snow lovers it’s a glorious time! You can cross country ski or snowmobile on a road where Bear Valley Snowmobile proclaims snowmobiling isn’t just fun, it’s the only way to get around! Here are some places to snowmobile during the fabulous, frosty winter months.
