California Summer of Art – Shows, Festivals, Laguna Beach Pageant of the Masters

Published on: June 25, 2012

You don’t have to be in the market for art to enjoy an art show, and you don’t have to travel very far (in most instances) to see one in California this summer. We’re busy compiling a list of events that art show planners have presented to us and will feature that list, hopefully this week.

The longest running art shows  in California’s incredible “Art City”, Laguna Beach, have begun with the repeat 3 events- Festival of Arts, Sawdust Festival and the most fun to see (in our opinion,)  Festival of Arts – Pageant of the Masters,  an internationally acclaimed production of tableaux vivants – “living pictures.”

The art pageant shown in photos takes place annually July through August in an outdoor amphitheater which is surrounded by fragrant eucalyptus trees in the Laguna Canyon, and is a staged  evening production in which guests watch famous paintings come to life. Actors are painted and dressed to fit into famous paintings appearing on the set. When the curtain opens, you watch to see if any of the actors in the paintings flinch or move. You wouldn’t necessarily know there are real humans in the painting until you see someone move or twitch. It’s uniquely entertaining, especially when moths are flying in the light and dive-bombing– onto actors! Kids are in the paintings, too.

Volunteers are magically transformed into life-sized re-creations of classical and contemporary paintings, sculptures and other works of art. Presentations are accompanied by the music of a full, live orchestra and live narration in a starlit bowl-shaped amphitheater. The 2012 Pageant of the Masters presentation, The Genius, showcases the fascinating and unpredictable relationship between art and technology. Running nightly July 7 – August 31, 2012 at 8:30 p.m., tickets for Pageant of the Masters are $15 – $100. Pageant of the Masters ticket holders can present their stub at The Festival of Arts front gate for free admission to the art show all summer long.
