California, the Peach State

As Marysville prepares for its annual Peach Festival on July 18 & 19, 2014, Californians can thank Jody Sodaro of Sodaro Orchards for thinking up the event in 1999. It turns out that celebrating peaches isn’t just about her orchard, it’s about recognition that California is the largest producer of peaches in the nation–not Georgia, the Peach State!  Just like Wisconsin is called the Dairy State even though California is the biggest dairy producer, we’re not getting our just desserts when it comes to peaches. You can even the score by attending the Marysville Peach Festival where you can sample peach ice cream, peach cobbler, peach pie, peach jam, peach bbq sauce and many peach-inspired dishes. What else is California holding back on? We’re the nut state, the avocado state, the artichoke state, the grape state, the wine state and more.
