The Fix is In. Californians Love Ren

Though California can’t take credit for the origination of Shakespeare in the Park plays and productions, there’s another Renaissance era festival home grown in the Golden State. The modern day Renaissance festival which began in the Hollywood Hills 57 years ago now spans the nation, while the epicenter remains California, where you’ll find more than 25 themed festivals and “faires” each year.

It’s difficult to say which Renaissance-era themed production is more popular–there are more than 25 Shakespeare summer festivals, as well. What you can say for certain is that Californians love Ren.

William Shakespeare lived in Elizabethan England and worked in the theater when the Renaissance movement in the arts was peaking.  His plays were said to have delighted and entertained Queen Elizabeth, the favorite character portrayed at modern day Renaissance fairs.

Known as the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth lost her mom (Anne Boleyn) in an execution when Elizabeth was two-and-a-half years old. Disowned by her father (Henry VIII,) she only took her country’s reigns after other half brothers and sisters passed away. The Elizabethan era during her time as Queen of England & Ireland lasted 45 years and was famous for the flourishing of English drama, led by playwrights such as William Shakespeare.

It’s helpful to have a little background knowledge when attending a Renaissance event, though you can actually rent a costume at many faires and immerse yourself in the subject (which is loosely interpreted) as you stroll around. The first Renaissance festival in 1963 began as a class activity and learning experience for youth. Who could have known that it would become so huge?
