Lack of water in California has been setting records for several years during the state’s drought but this week there are several attempts to set Guinness World Records IN the water. On June 18, 2015 The World’s Largest Swim Lesson attempted to break a Guinness record with 75 locations in California participating. 40,000 swimmers in 24 countries attempted to set the 6th World Record for Largest Swim Lesson. Sponsored by approx. one dozen agencies, the goal was to bring awareness that an estimated 88% of childhood swimming deaths are preventable through swim lessons. Drowning is one of the top causes of death in children.  The world record won’t be officially declared until the numbers have been tallied.

The other Guinness Record attempts this weekend take place near Huntington Beach Pier where 60 surfers will mount a 42-foot long surfboard and take a ride, setting records for the world’s largest surfboard and most surfers taking a ride. The “Epic Big Board Ride” takes place on June 20, 2015 from 9 a.m. – Noon. Shown in the photo is an attempt in 2005 which didn’t qualify for a Guinness World Record. Huntington Beach (Surf City) is hoping for a victory this time around.

If you love Guinness World Records, California has had quite a few of them. Here’s the biggest hamburger.
