California, the land of 1,000 miles of beaches has water everywhere–but not enough to drink, apparently.  For the first time in 75?years of measurements officials found no snow whatsoever in the Sierras when doing snowpack assessments. It is worse this year than last, in fact. The news yesterday when Gov. Brown did his photo op during the regularly scheduled Sierra snowpack measurements was the establishment of water restrictions.

The Plan:

  • Cities and towns should cut water consumption by 25% through Feb. 28, 2016
  • Golf courses, cemeteries, universities must curb their green lawn thirsts
  • Local governments to replace 50 million square feet of lawns with drought-tolerant landscaping
  • Ban on municipalities watering decorative grasses on public street medians
  • Newly built homes must use drip or microspray irrigation systems for lawns
  • Creation of rebate program for consumers who purchase more water-efficient appliance
  • Local water agencies to implement tiered water pricing that charges higher rates as more water is used
  • Agricultural users to report more water use information to state regulators
