While California has provided at least four U.S. Capitol Christmas Trees for the White House lawn, this year a perfect 74-foot Lutz spruce from Chugach National Forest in Alaska was chosen. It set history yesterday, arriving in Tacoma by sea. The first tree to travel by water and first tree selected from Alaska finishes its 4,000 mile journey on a truck, making publicity stops along the way. On December 2, 2015 at 5 p.m. the public is invited to the big Tree Lighting Ceremony on the West Capitol Lawn. Through January 1, 2016 you can see the lit tree from nightfall until 11 p.m. each evening.

How to pick the Capitol Tree:

  • Height should be 65-85 feet
  • Shape must be perfectly conical for viewing from all sides
  • Straight stem, uniform branching, natural density and a good rich color are a must!
