If you’re in L.A. this Sunday, prepare for some road closures. A car free day is planned October 5, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the heart of Los Angeles with the route extending into Echo Park, the Historic Broadway Theater District, through Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles. Called cicLAvia (ciclavia.org), this popular event is a non-profit effort to promote safe bicycling and pedestrian opportunities. The group got a boost this summer when the Metro Board of Directors voted unanimously to award CicLAvia-partnered projects more than $2.35 million, or 65% of the overall funding. This good news made it possible to add an East LA extension to the upcoming event. Pasadena, San Fernando Valley, Culver City and Southeast Cities will have their first CicLAvia events in 2015 and 2016. These are new CicLAvia route areas, and the events will showcase the culture, architecture, history and businesses of each community. In addition to the Metro funding, which will cover a portion of the event costs, the individual communities and CicLAvia will also contribute significant funds toward producing each route.  San Diego hosts a similar event Nov. 9, 2014 in the Hillcrest and Banker’s Hill area.

Rules of the Road

1. Slow traffic should always stay on the far right side. Traffic may include walkers, children, skaters and joggers.
2. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the route.
3. Helmets are strongly encouraged and mandatory for anyone under 18 years of age.
4. Don’t use your phone while you are on your bike.
